Great Barrier Reef★★★
The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system on Earth — 2,300 kilometers long, visible from space, home to over 1,500 species of fish, 400 species of coral, 4,000 species of mollusks, and six of the world's seven species of sea turtles. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981 and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
The reef is not a single reef but consists of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands — an ecosystem the size of Germany. The best access points:
From Cairns & Port Douglas (most popular starting point)
- Outer Reef Day Trips: Boats depart daily to the outer reef (1.5–2 hours journey). There, the corals are healthiest and visibility is best (up to 30 meters). Providers: Quicksilver (from 270 AUD, large pontoon ship with underwater observatory), Reef Magic (from 249 AUD), Passions of Paradise (from 199 AUD, smaller, more personal).
- Snorkeling vs. Diving: Snorkeling is included in the price and is sufficient for 90% of visitors — the corals begin right below the water surface. Introductory dives for beginners (no certification needed) from 80 AUD extra.
- Scenic Flights: A helicopter or seaplane flight over the reef shows the incredible dimension — endless turquoise and blue patterns. From 180 AUD (30 min).
From Whitsundays (most spectacular scenery)
The Whitsunday Islands offer the combination of reef and dream beaches. Day trips to Heart Reef (heart-shaped reef, only visible from the air) and Hardy Reef. → Details in the Whitsunday Islands section.
Ecological Condition
The reef is threatened by coral bleaching (climate change), crown-of-thorns starfish, and water pollution. Nevertheless, there are areas with spectacular health. Choose an environmentally certified provider (ECO certificate) and use reef-friendly sunscreen (no oxybenzone, no octinoxate).
💡 Tipp
The best visibility in the reef is from June to November (dry season, clear water). Book a trip to the outer reef instead of the inner — the corals are healthier and the fish diversity greater. If you get seasick: take travel tablets 30 minutes before departure.
Achtung
From November to May, there are dangerous box jellyfish in coastal waters. At the beaches, Stinger Suits (full-body suits) are mandatory. On reef trips to the outer reef, jellyfish are rarely a problem. Irukandji jellyfish (tiny, extremely venomous) also sporadically occur at the outer reef — wear a Stinger Suit!
