The Whitsunday Islands are 74 tropical islands in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef — an archipelago of palm islands, turquoise lagoons, and arguably the most beautiful beach in the world: Whitehaven Beach. The 7-kilometer-long beach consists of 98% pure quartz sand, so fine that it doesn't heat up — walking barefoot at 40 °C air temperature is no problem.
The starting point for the Whitsundays is Airlie Beach, a lively backpacker town with a lagoon, bars, and tour operators. Only 8 of the 74 islands are inhabited — most are pristine national park.

- Hamilton Island: The only island with its own airport. Luxury resort (qualia from 1,200 AUD/night), but also accessible for day visitors. Buggy instead of car (cars prohibited), koalas in the resort's own wildlife park.
