Gellért Bath — Art Nouveau Splendor
The Gellért Gyógyfürdő (1918) is Budapest's most splendid thermal bath — an Art Nouveau palace at the foot of Gellért Hill, with marble columns, mosaics, sculptures, and an opulence reminiscent of a Habsburg palace. Here, one does not just bathe — here, one celebrates bathing.
The Highlights
- Main Hall: The centerpiece — a swimming pool under a glass-covered hall with marble columns and Art Nouveau ornaments. The water is 26°C (swimming pool) and 36°C (thermal pool). The atmosphere is solemn — one whispers here involuntarily.
- Thermal Pools: Several indoor pools with 34–40°C, including a round whirlpool and a hot plunge pool.
- Wave Pool (Outdoor): The outdoor pool has a wave machine (hourly) — fun for families and unique among thermal baths. In summer: also an outdoor swimming pool.
- Steam Bath and Saunas: Turkish steam bath, Finnish sauna, and a Kneipp path.
