Torres del Paine — Patagonia's Crown Jewel

The Parque Nacional Torres del Paine is one of the most spectacular national parks in the world and Chile's most visited natural wonder. Covering an area of 1,810 km² (about the size of Lake Constance), granite spires rise above turquoise lakes, glaciers calve thunderously into the water, and guanacos (wild llamas) graze unperturbed against a backdrop that is unreal in its beauty.

The centerpiece is the eponymous Torres (Towers): three massive granite spires that rise up to 2,850 meters high and were shaped by the glacial ice of the last ice age. Next to them, the Cuernos del Paine (Horns), whose dark granite peaks sit on light sedimentary rock bases, form one of the most iconic mountain panoramas in the world.

The W-Trek

The W-Trek is a 76 km long long-distance trail named for its W-shaped route. It is one of the best treks in the world and leads through the park's most spectacular landscapes in 4–5 days:

  • Day 1: Torres Base — The ascent (8–9h round trip) to the base of the three granite towers. The last stretch is steep and rocky, but the moment you see the towers above the turquoise glacial lake is life-changing.
  • Day 2: Valle del Francés — Through a vast glacier valley with views of the Cuernos and Cerro Paine Grande. Avalanches thunder down from the glaciers — a sound you'll never forget.
  • Day 3–4: Glacier Grey — Hike to the massive Grey Glacier, which calves into the lake of the same name. House-high icebergs in surreal blue float on the milky-turquoise water.

Practical Info

  • Season: October–April, high season December–February
  • Reservations: MANDATORY! All campsites and refugios (mountain huts) must be booked months in advance. No reservation, no access to the trail!
  • Day Visitors: Possible even without the W-Trek — day hikes to the Torres, Mirador Cuernos, or Grey Glacier.
  • Weather: Unpredictable! Four seasons in one day. Rain, sun, storm, and calm alternate. Good rain gear and layering are mandatory.

Achtung

Reservations for the W-Trek in the high season (December–February) must be booked 3–6 months in advance — after that, everything is fully booked! Book through the official operators: Vértice (western camps) and CONAF/Fantastico Sur (eastern camps). Without a reservation, you will be turned away at the park entrance.
