Food & Drink in Patagonia

Patagonia's cuisine is hearty, meat-heavy, and shaped by the elements: Wind, cold, and isolation have created a food culture that relies on lamb, seafood, and simple, warming dishes.

Patagonian Specialties

  • Cordero al Palo: THE national dish of Patagonia — a whole lamb is stretched on wooden stakes and roasted over an open fire for 3–4 hours until the meat is buttery soft and the crust is golden brown. A ritual in Puerto Natales and on the estancias
  • Centolla (King Crab): The giant crabs from the Strait of Magellan are a delicacy — "al natural" (simply with lemon) is the best preparation. In Punta Arenas from 20,000 CLP for a whole crab
  • Calafate Berry: The blue berry that grows everywhere in Patagonia is said to have magical powers according to legend: Whoever eats it will return to Patagonia. Available as jam, in cakes, and as Calafate-Sour (Pisco Sour with Calafate)
  • Chupe de Centolla: Gratinated king crab casserole with cheese and cream — the ultimate comfort food after a cold hiking day

Restaurants in Puerto Natales

Afrigonia · Eberhard 343 — African-Patagonian fusion (yes, really!). The chef from Congo combines African spices with Patagonian lamb and seafood. Unique and great. 15,000–25,000 CLP.

La Mesita Grande · Arturo Prat 196 — The best pizza in Patagonia, baked in a wood-fired oven. Huge portions, relaxed atmosphere, BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle). Pizza from 10,000 CLP.

El Living · Arturo Prat 156 — Cozy café-restaurant with good breakfast, vegetarian options, and an impressive book exchange library. Cake 4,000 CLP.

Cervecería Baguales · Bories 430 — Patagonia's best craft brewery. The Bock and the IPA are excellent. Brewery tour with tasting 8,000 CLP. 0.5l beer from 4,500 CLP.

Parrilla Don Jorge · Bories 585 — Rustic parrilla (grill restaurant) with the best Cordero al Palo in town. Lamb ribs 12,000 CLP, whole lamb menu 18,000 CLP.

💡 Tipp

Patagonia's restaurants are surprisingly good, but prices are 20–40% above the Chilean average — everything has to be transported from far away. Money-saving tip: Buy supplies at the Lider or Unimarc supermarket and cook in the hostel. For the W-Trek: Refugios offer meal packages (breakfast 12,000 CLP, lunch box 10,000 CLP, dinner 18,000 CLP) — self-catering saves significantly.
