Culture in Leith
Trainspotting District
Leith is the setting of Irvine Welsh's "Trainspotting" (1993) — the novel (and the film starring Ewan McGregor) that ruthlessly portrayed Edinburgh's dark side in the 1980s and 90s: drug addiction, poverty, hopelessness. Leith has since radically transformed — from a problem district to a hipster hotspot — but the history is part of it.
Out of the Blue Drill Hall
A former military hall repurposed into an art and culture center: galleries, studios, workshops, and a café. A hub of the Leith creative scene.
Leith Theatre
Opened in 1932 and long closed, Leith Theatre is being gradually restored — during the festival season, it hosts Fringe shows and concerts. A symbol of Leith's renaissance.
Beer & Spirits
- Pilot Beer: Leith's own craft brewery with a taproom — fresh beer, experimental varieties, local atmosphere.
- Port of Leith Distillery: Edinburgh's first single-malt whisky distillery in over 100 years — opened in 2023, with tours and tastings. A symbolic new beginning for Leith's maritime whisky tradition.
