The Royal Yacht Britannia was the floating home of the British royal family for 44 years (1953–1997) — and visiting it in Leith is one of Edinburgh's most popular attractions. The ship is permanently moored at Ocean Terminal and offers a fascinating insight into the life of the royals at sea.

What you see

  • The State Apartments: Where the Queen received foreign dignitaries — surprisingly understated and tastefully furnished. No pomp, just British understated elegance.
  • The Crew Quarters: Where the 240-strong crew lived — much more cramped than the royal quarters, but with the pride of an elite unit.
  • The Royal Bedrooms: Separate bedrooms for the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, connected by a shared sitting room. The most human corner of the ship.
  • Engine Room: The technology that powered the 126-meter-long ship. Spotlessly polished — the tradition lives on.
  • The Royal Deck Tea Room: Afternoon tea on board with a view over Leith — a stylish conclusion.

💡 Tipp

The audio guide (included in the price) is unusually good — it tells anecdotes about life on board, the Queen's favorite dishes, and the rules for the crew (shoes had to be silent!). Plan for 1.5–2 hours.
