Discover Crete
Crete is not just a Greek island — Crete is a cosmos of its own. With 8,450 km², it is the fifth-largest island in the Mediterranean, 260 km long and up to 60 km wide. Here, 4,000 years ago, Europe's first high culture, the Minoans, emerged. Here grows Europe's oldest olive tree (in Vouves, estimated 3,000–5,000 years old). Here lies Europe's longest gorge, Europe's southernmost palm beach, and one of the healthiest cuisines in the world.
The Cretans are proud — some say stubborn. They consider themselves first as Cretans, then as Greeks. Historically, they had every reason to: Crete was alternately under Venetian rule (1204–1669), Ottoman occupation (1669–1898), and only became officially part of Greece in 1913. You can feel these layers in the architecture, the cuisine, and the character of the people.
The island is divided into four regional districts, from west to east:
- Chania — the most scenically spectacular part: Samaria Gorge, Balos Lagoon, Elafonisi, the most beautiful old town in Crete
- Rethymno — the relaxed middle: Venetian-Ottoman old town, Arkadi Monastery, Preveli Palm Beach
- Heraklion — the cultural heart: Knossos, Archaeological Museum, wine region, most resorts
- Lasithi — the wild east: Spinalonga, Vai Palm Forest, Europe's southernmost city Ierapetra
A rental car is a must on Crete. The public bus service (KTEL) connects the northern coastal cities well, but the most beautiful beaches, gorges, and mountain villages are unreachable without a car. Rental cars from Heraklion or Chania airport cost from 20€/day in the low season, 35–50€/day in the high season. Book at least 2 weeks in advance — in July/August, cheap cars are quickly gone.
Plan at least a full week, better 10–14 days. Crete rewards slow travel: A mountain village, a hidden beach, a raki with the tavern owner — these are the moments that stay.
💡 Tipp
Crete is HUGE (260 km long). Don't try to see everything in one week. Better to choose West Crete OR East Crete. If you want to see the whole island, you need at least 2 weeks and should change accommodations once (e.g., 1 week in Chania, 1 week in Agios Nikolaos).
