Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory in Greece, but appreciated — and expected in some situations.

Good to Know

  • In taverns, there is often a "couvert" (cover charge) on the bill — this is NOT a tip, but a fee for bread, cutlery, and tablecloth (1-2 EUR per person). This is legal and common
  • With card payment, there is usually no tip option on the terminal. Leave the tip separately in cash on the table
  • In simple taverns in the countryside, tips are less expected than in tourist restaurants
