West End — Theater & Nightlife★★
London's West End — the theater district around Shaftesbury Avenue, Drury Lane, and the Haymarket — is, alongside Broadway, the epicenter of English-speaking theater. Over 40 theaters offer performances every night: from long-running classics like The Phantom of the Opera (until 2023 after 36 years), Les Misérables (since 1985!), and The Mousetrap (Agatha Christie, since 1952 — the longest-running play in the world) to current hits like Hamilton, Wicked, and The Book of Mormon.
The theaters themselves are sights: Victorian and Edwardian jewels with velvet curtains, gilded stucco decorations, and red plush seats. The Theatre Royal Drury Lane (since 1663!) is the oldest still-operating theater in London — and supposedly the most haunted.
Half-price tickets: At the TKTS booth at Leicester Square, you can get tickets for West End shows on the same day with up to 50% discount. Queue from 10 AM — the selection is best. Alternatively: Many shows have a Ticket Lottery (via app) for cheap seats on the same day. Rush tickets for £20–25 are available for some shows for the front row — stamina required.
After the show: Soho right next door is London's nightlife district — cocktail bars, jazz clubs, the legendary Ronnie Scott's (the best jazz club in town since 1959), LGBTQ+ bars on Old Compton Street, and restaurants that cook until midnight.
💡 Tipp
The TKTS booth at Leicester Square is the best place for spontaneous theater visits — but do NOT go to the ticket booths around the square that look "official." Many are third-party vendors with a markup. Only the TKTS pavilion in the middle of the square (operated by SOLT) officially sells discounted tickets.
