Whisky Trail — The Pilgrimage of Connoisseurs

Scottish Scotch Whisky (without an "e"!) is an art, a science, and a religion. Over 130 active distilleries produce one of the world's most complex spirits — from light, floral Lowland malts to sherry-cask-aged Speyside whiskeys to the smoky, peaty Islay monsters that taste of campfire and sea.

The Speyside — Whisky Capital of the World

In Speyside (northeast Scotland, around the River Spey), over 50 distilleries are concentrated in a small area — more than in any other region in the world. The official Malt Whisky Trail connects seven distilleries and a cooperage:

• Glenfiddich — The world's best-selling single malt brand. Excellent free tour
• The Macallan — The new visitor center (2018) is an architectural masterpiece: wave-shaped grass roof blending into the landscape. Premium tours from £25
• Glenlivet — The distillery that received the first legal license in 1824 and established Speyside's reputation
• Aberlour — Sherry-aged specialty. The Founder's Tour (£30) with extensive tasting is excellent
• Speyside Cooperage — Here, the oak casks are built and repaired. Fascinating: The coopers work at a breathtaking pace

Islay — The Smoke Island

For lovers of peaty-smoky whiskies, Islay (pronunciation: "Eila") is the promised land. Nine distilleries on a small island: Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Ardbeg (the "holy trinity of peat"), Bowmore, Bruichladdich. The ferry from Kennacraig takes 2 hours, and Islay deserves at least 3 days.

Scotch vs. Irish Whiskey: Scotch is usually distilled twice (Irish: thrice = smoother). The barley is dried over peat fires (smoky flavor — extreme with Islay, milder with Speyside). Scotch must mature for at least 3 years in oak casks in Scotland. "Whisky" without "e" = Scottish; "Whiskey" with "e" = Irish/American.
