Ancient Civilizations & Vedic Period

India's history begins with one of the oldest civilizations in the world: the Indus Valley Civilization (3300–1300 BC). The cities of Mohenjo-daro and Harappa (now in Pakistan) were far ahead of their time — with sewage systems, standardized bricks, granaries, and city planning not seen again for millennia. Over 1,000 settlements spanned an area larger than Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia combined.

From around 1500 BC, the Vedic period began: The sacred texts of the Vedas were composed — the oldest religious scriptures in the world and the foundation of Hinduism. During this time, the caste system, the Sanskrit language, and the foundations of Indian philosophy emerged. The great epics Mahabharata and Ramayana (circa 400 BC) remain vibrant cultural works to this day — every Indian knows their stories, they are adapted into TV series and depicted in temples.

In the 6th century BC, two reform movements emerged that would change the world: Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama, circa 563–483 BC) founded Buddhism in Northern India, and Mahavira founded Jainism — both as responses to the rigid Brahmanical rule.

The Maurya Empire (322–185 BC) under Emperor Ashoka was the first pan-Indian empire. Ashoka converted to Buddhism after the bloody Kalinga War and became the first great ruler of peace in history. His lion capital pillar is now the state emblem of India, and the Ashoka Chakra adorns the Indian flag.
