Spice Plantations

Goa's hinterland is surprisingly green and hilly—perfect for spice cultivation. Several Spice Plantations near Ponda (30 km east of the coast) offer tours through fragrant gardens with cardamom, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, turmeric, and ginger. The best plantations:

  • Sahakari Spice Farm: The most popular and professional—guided tour through the spice garden, traditional Goan lunch on banana leaves, and the opportunity to watch young staff climb areca nut palms. 500 ₹ including lunch.
  • Tropical Spice Plantation: A bit quieter, with elephant bathing (ethically questionable, please inform yourself beforehand) and a good herbal medicine section. 600 ₹ including lunch.

Near Ponda are also some of the oldest Hindu temples in Goa that survived the Portuguese destruction: the Shri Mangeshi Temple and the Shri Mahalasa Temple are the most significant.

Nightlife & Trance Scene

Goa is the cradle of Psychedelic Trance music—and even though the golden days of illegal beach raves in the 90s are over, the scene continues in regulated clubs:

  • Hilltop (Vagator): The most legendary open-air club in Goa on a cliff over the sea. Trance and techno under the stars, with views of the illuminated beach. The best parties on Saturdays.
  • Curlies (Anjuna): Beach bar with regular trance parties and sunset sessions.
  • Chronicle (Vagator): New, professional club with international DJs.
  • Club Cubana (Arpora): "Nightclub in the Sky"—on a hill with an infinity pool and panoramic view. More mainstream/Bollywood than trance.

In South Goa, the nightlife is quieter: Palolem has its famous Silent Discos (headphone parties), where you can choose between three DJ channels—quirky fun from 200 ₹ headphone rental.

Goan Cuisine

Goa's cuisine is unique in India: The 450-year Portuguese rule has deeply influenced the food. Fish Curry Rice (fish curry with coconut sauce and rice) is the national dish. Vindaloo (from the Portuguese Vinha d'Alhos—wine and garlic) is known worldwide. Bebinca is a seven-layer coconut egg cake and the most famous dessert. Additionally: Feni, a local spirit made from cashew nuts or coconut palm sap—an acquired taste, but authentic.

💡 Tipp

The best Goan restaurants away from the tourist traps: "Gunpowder" in Assagao (creative South Indian cuisine), "Vinayak Family Restaurant" in Assagao (authentic Goan thalis for 150 ₹), and "Fisherman's Wharf" in Cavelossim (seafood with river view). Ask locals for their favorite "local"—the best Goan restaurants don't have English menus.
