Thali — the Perfect Meal

A Thali is not a single dish, but a complete concept: a round metal plate with a selection of small bowls (Katoris) that form a complete, balanced meal. A typical Thali includes: Dal (lentils), Sabzi (vegetable curry), Raita (yogurt), Roti/Rice, Pickle (pickled vegetables), Papad (crispy lentil flatbread), and a sweet dessert.

The genius: In many restaurants, you get an Unlimited Thali — refills of everything as often as you want, for a fixed price of 80–200 ₹ (0.90–2.30 €). Rajasthani Thalis are particularly opulent (up to 25 bowls!), South Indian Thalis are served on banana leaves.

Chai — More Than Tea

Chai is India's national drink — black tea, brewed with milk, sugar, and spices (cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, cloves). At every street corner, there are Chai Wallahs (tea vendors) who serve the tea in small clay cups (Kulhar) or glasses. Price: 10–20 ₹ (0.10–0.20 €). The Chai at a dusty roadside, brewed over a gas flame in a dented aluminum pot, is often the best of your life.
