Wildlife — Tigers, Elephants & More
India is one of the last refuges for some of the world's most iconic wildlife — despite the enormous population pressure, the country has achieved remarkable successes in species conservation.
The Bengal Tiger
India is home to over 3,600 tigers — more than any other country. The Project Tiger (since 1973) has increased the population from under 2,000 to over 3,600. The best national parks for tiger sightings:
- Ranthambore (Rajasthan): The highest sighting rate, dramatic fort backdrop
- Bandhavgarh (Madhya Pradesh): India's highest tiger density
- Kanha (Madhya Pradesh): Inspiration for Kipling's "Jungle Book"
- Jim Corbett (Uttarakhand): India's oldest national park (1936)
Other Star Animals
- Asian Elephant: Over 30,000 wild elephants, mainly in Kerala, Karnataka, and the Northeast
- Indian Rhinoceros: In Kaziranga National Park (Assam) — UNESCO World Heritage with the highest rhino population in the world
- Asiatic Lion: Found ONLY in Gir National Park (Gujarat) — about 700 animals
- Snow Leopard: In the high altitudes of Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh — extremely rare and elusive
- Indian Peafowl: India's national bird — found everywhere, especially in Rajasthan
💡 Tipp
The best time for tiger safaris is from March to May — the heat drives the animals to water, and the sparse vegetation improves visibility. Book safaris at least 90 days in advance through the official national park websites. Private tour operators like Pugdundee, Suján, and Taj Safari offer luxurious package tours to multiple parks.
