Hampi is one of the most extraordinary places in the world — and one of the most underrated. The ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire (14th–16th century), scattered over a surreal landscape of gigantic granite boulders, banana plantations, and the Tungabhadra River, form a UNESCO World Heritage site of breathtaking beauty. At its peak, Vijayanagara was the second-largest city in the world after Beijing — with over 500,000 inhabitants.

The centerpiece is the Virupaksha Temple, the only temple in Hampi still in active worship — uninterrupted for over 1,000 years. The 50-meter-high Gopuram (temple tower) dominates the skyline, and the temple elephant Lakshmi blesses visitors for a small coin. The Vittala Temple is Hampi's masterpiece: The famous Stone Chariot, a temple chariot carved from a single granite block, is Hampi's emblem and depicted on the 50-rupee note. The 56 musical pillars in the courtyard produce different tones when struck — an architectural marvel.

The Royal Enclosure showcases the remnants of secular power: the Lotus Mahal (an elegant pavilion blending Hindu and Islamic architecture), the Elephant Stables (elephant stables with 11 arched chambers), and the steps of the Stepped Tank (royal bath). The Hemakuta Hill between Virupaksha Temple and Krishna Temple offers the best sunset view over the entire ruins landscape.

Across the river lies Anegundi, the older village believed to be the birthplace of the mythical monkey king Hanuman. Here you can view rock paintings, walk through banana plantations, and enjoy the relaxed hippie atmosphere in the guesthouses along the riverbank. The crossing by coracle (round basket boat) costs 20 ₹ — an experience in itself.

💡 Tipp

Rent a bicycle (150–200 ₹/day) or moped (300–400 ₹/day) — the ruins are widely scattered (25 km² area). Plan for at least 2–3 full days. Sunrise from Matanga Hill (30-minute climb) is spectacular — the first rays of sun over the rocks and temple ruins. Bring enough water, shade is rare!

Achtung

Hampi is a protected UNESCO site. In recent years, illegal structures on the hippie side (Virupapur Gaddi) have been demolished. The Indian government plans further protective measures. Respect the ruins — no climbing on temples or graffiti on rocks.
