The Spread of Islam (13th–16th Century)

Islam reached Indonesia not through conquest, but through trade. Arab and Indian Muslim traders brought the faith to the port cities of Sumatra and Java from the 13th century onwards. The first Islamic sultanate — Samudra Pasai in North Sumatra — emerged around 1267.

The Islamization was gradual and syncretic: Islam blended with Hindu, Buddhist, and animistic traditions to form a unique Indonesian version of the faith. The Wali Songo (Nine Saints) — Muslim missionaries in Java — used Wayang theater, Gamelan music, and local myths to spread Islam, rather than destroying local traditions.

The result is an Islam fundamentally different from the Arab form: In Java, Muslims visit Hindu temples, in Bali and the eastern islands, Hinduism and animism survived, and in Sulawesi, Flores, and the Moluccas, Christianity spread. This religious diversity remains a hallmark of Indonesia today — and at the same time a source of tension.
