Independence & Modern Era (1945–present)

On August 17, 1945 — two days after the Japanese surrender — Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta declared Indonesia's independence. What followed was a four-year bloody struggle against the Netherlands, which did not want to give up its colony. Only in 1949, under international pressure (especially from the USA), did the Netherlands recognize sovereignty.

Sukarno (1945–1967)

The charismatic founding father Sukarno united the impossibly diverse nation with his formula Pancasila — the five state principles (belief in God, humanism, national unity, democracy through consensus, social justice), which still form the state philosophy today. Sukarno was a visionary but also authoritarian: His "Guided Democracy" from 1957 was de facto a dictatorship.

Suharto & the New Order (1967–1998)

General Suharto took power after the mysterious coup attempt of 1965, followed by massacres of suspected communists, where an estimated 500,000 to one million people were killed — one of the greatest crimes of the 20th century, which remains largely unaddressed. Suharto's "New Order" brought economic growth but also brutal repression, corruption, and the occupation of East Timor (1975–1999).

Reformasi & Democracy (1998–present)

The Asian crisis of 1997/98 toppled Suharto. The Reformasi (Reform) movement led to a democratic transformation that was remarkably successful: Indonesia is now the third-largest democracy in the world with free elections, press freedom, and decentralization. Challenges remain: corruption, religious extremism, environmental destruction, and the Papua issue.
