Vesuvius
The Vesuvius (1,281 m) is the only active volcano on the European mainland and looms menacingly over Naples and the entire bay. Its last eruption was in 1944, and geologists consider another eruption inevitable — 600,000 people live in the "red zone".
The ascent from the parking lot (Quota 1,000) to the crater rim takes about 30 minutes on a well-maintained gravel path. At the top: an impressive view into the 300 m deep crater and over the entire Gulf of Naples. On clear days, you can see Capri, Ischia, and the Amalfi Coast.
