RegionenMilan (Milano)

Milan (Milano)★★

Milan is not Italy's most beautiful city — but its most dynamic. Economic powerhouse, fashion capital, design center, and home to some of the world's most significant artworks. Milan needs 2–3 days and rewards with an energy that Rome and Florence do not have.

Duomo di Milano ★★★

Italy's largest church and the third largest in the world: 600 years of construction (1386–1965), 3,400 statues, 135 spires, white Candoglia marble. The roof terrace (elevator €16, stairs €10) is the highlight — a forest of marble pinnacles with panoramic views over the city to the Alps. Inside: 5 naves, impressive stained glass windows, and the crypt with the relic of San Carlo Borromeo.

Leonardo's Last Supper (Cenacolo Vinciano) ★★★

In the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie is Leonardo's most famous mural: The Last Supper (1495–1498). The composition, the psychology of the apostles, the light — everything is revolutionary. Visit only with reservation possible (15 min. per group, max. 25 people). Tickets are released 2–3 months in advance and are immediately sold out. Book on the release day!

Navigli District ★★

The canals (Navigli) south of the center are Milan's nightlife district: restaurants, bars, vintage shops, and galleries line the banks. The Aperitivo — a drink from 6 p.m. (8–12 €) with a lavish free buffet — is a must here. On the last Sunday of the month, the Mercatone dell'Antiquariato takes place, one of the largest flea markets in Italy.

Fashion & Shopping

The Quadrilatero della Moda (Via Montenapoleone, Via della Spiga, Via Sant'Andrea, Corso Venezia) is Italy's most expensive shopping street: Armani, Prada, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana. For mortal budgets: the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (Milan's "Salon", the oldest shopping gallery in the world) or the outlets at Serravalle and Fidenza Village (30–70% discount on designer brands, 1h drive).

💡 Tipp

Tickets for Leonardo's Last Supper are the most difficult reservations in Italy. Tip: The website cenacolovinciano.org releases tickets on the 1st of the month for 2 months in advance. Alternatively: Guided tours through providers like GetYourGuide often have contingents left, but are more expensive (€40–50).
