Practical Tips for Northern Italy

Transportation

Milan, Verona, and Turin are perfect train cities (Trenitalia/Italo). For the lakes and Dolomites, a rental car is ideal. The Gardesana (lakeside road on Lake Garda) is prone to traffic jams in summer, the Dolomite passes are snow-free only from June to October.

Climate

Northern Italy has a continental climate: hot, humid summers (35°C in Milan, with high humidity), cold winters (snow in the Alps, fog in the Po Valley). Best travel time: May–June and September–October. The lakes have their own microclimate — milder on the shores than inland.

Budget

Northern Italy is generally more expensive than the south. Milan is Italy's most expensive city (hotel from €120/night), the Dolomites are high-priced in winter (skiing) and summer (hiking). The lakes vary greatly: Bellagio and Gardone are exclusive, the eastern places on Lake Garda (Bardolino, Garda) are cheaper. Piedmont outside Turin is surprisingly affordable.
