RegionenSan Gimignano

San Gimignano★★

The "Manhattan of the Middle Ages" — 14 of the once 72 family towers (Torri) still rise above the skyline of the hill town. In the 13th and 14th centuries, rival noble families built the towers as status symbols: the higher the tower, the more powerful the family. Today, San Gimignano is a UNESCO World Heritage site and undoubtedly picturesque — but also extremely touristy.

Nevertheless, a visit is worthwhile: The Torre Grossa (54 m, tallest tower, 9 €) offers the best view over Tuscany. The Gelateria Dondoli on Piazza della Cisterna has been repeatedly voted the best in Italy — the flavors Crema di Santa Fina and Rosemary Baby are legendary.

💡 Tipp

Come early in the morning (before 10 AM) or late afternoon when the tour buses are gone. Or stay overnight — in the evening, when the day tourists have disappeared, San Gimignano is yours alone. The Vernaccia di San Gimignano (white wine) is the perfect aperitif.
