Rialto Bridge & Markets★★

The Ponte di Rialto (1588–1591) was the only bridge over the Grand Canal for 400 years. The distinctive stone arch design with its shops replaced a wooden bridge that collapsed under the weight of a crowd. Today, it is Venice's most photographed structure after St. Mark's Basilica — and accordingly crowded. Tip: The bridge is illuminated in the evening and much quieter than during the day.

Rialto Market (Mercato di Rialto) ★★★

At the foot of the bridge lies one of the oldest markets in the world — trading here since the 11th century. The fish market (Pescherìa, Tue–Sat until 12 PM) is an experience: fresh seafood directly from the lagoon, squid, crabs, mussels. Next door, the fruit and vegetable market. Afterwards, head to one of the Bacari (wine bars) around and try Cicchetti (Venetian tapas): Baccalà mantecato (creamed cod), Sarde in saor (sweet and sour sardines), Polpette (meatballs). 1–3 € per piece, plus a glass of wine (Ombra) for 2–3 €.
