Safety
Japan is one of the safest countries in the world. The crime rate is extremely low — lost wallets are regularly returned with all contents to the lost and found (Koban/police box).
- Theft/robbery: Extremely rare. Still, exercise normal caution.
- Out at night: Even late at night, Japanese cities are safe — even solo female travelers report a very high sense of security.
- Natural hazards: Earthquakes (early warning system, "Safety Tips" app), typhoons (August–October), volcanoes (rare direct danger to tourists)
- Koban: Japan's mini-police stations on almost every corner. Always staffed, extremely helpful — even for directions.
Emergency call: 110 (police) / 119 (fire department & ambulance)
💡 Tipp
The biggest "security problem" in Japan: forgetting your luggage. Japanese people leave bags in cafes to reserve their spot — theft is so rare that it works. Still: always carry your passport with you (ID requirement for foreigners).
