Temples & Shrines — The Difference

Japan has over 80,000 temples (Buddhist) and 80,000 shrines (Shintō) — knowing the difference enriches every visit:

Shrine (Jinja) — Shintō

  • Identified by the Torii gate (red or wooden) at the entrance
  • Worship of Kami (nature spirits, deities)
  • Ritual: Clapping hands (2×), bowing, prayer
  • Shimenawa (thick straw rope) marks sacred areas
  • Examples: Fushimi Inari, Meiji-Jingū, Itsukushima

Temple (Tera/Ji) — Buddhism

  • Identified by the Sanmon (main gate) and Buddha statues
  • Worship of Buddha and Bodhisattvas
  • Ritual: Incense, silent bowing, no clapping
  • Often with cemetery, Zen garden, bell tower
  • Examples: Sensō-ji, Kinkaku-ji, Tōdai-ji, Kiyomizu-dera

Many Japanese visit both — birth and wedding at the shrine, funeral at the temple. Religion in Japan is pragmatic, not exclusive.
