Temples & Shrines — The Difference
Japan has over 80,000 temples (Buddhist) and 80,000 shrines (Shintō) — knowing the difference enriches every visit:
Shrine (Jinja) — Shintō
- Identified by the Torii gate (red or wooden) at the entrance
- Worship of Kami (nature spirits, deities)
- Ritual: Clapping hands (2×), bowing, prayer
- Shimenawa (thick straw rope) marks sacred areas
- Examples: Fushimi Inari, Meiji-Jingū, Itsukushima
Temple (Tera/Ji) — Buddhism
- Identified by the Sanmon (main gate) and Buddha statues
- Worship of Buddha and Bodhisattvas
- Ritual: Incense, silent bowing, no clapping
- Often with cemetery, Zen garden, bell tower
- Examples: Sensō-ji, Kinkaku-ji, Tōdai-ji, Kiyomizu-dera
Many Japanese visit both — birth and wedding at the shrine, funeral at the temple. Religion in Japan is pragmatic, not exclusive.
