Discover Amman

Amman is a city you learn to love at second glance. At first glance, a sea of white and sand-colored houses climbing over seven (actually now nineteen) hills. At second glance, one of the most exciting cities in the Middle East: a 9,000-year-old history that can be read at the Citadel; a vibrant culinary scene ranging from street food to fine dining; and a warmth of the people that embraces every visitor.

The city is roughly divided into two worlds: Downtown (Al-Balad) in the valley is the old, chaotic, authentic Amman—here lie the Roman theater, the souks, and the cheapest falafel in the city. West Amman (Abdali, Sweifieh, Abdoun) on the hills is the modern Amman—cafés, rooftop bars, international restaurants, and trendy galleries.

Plan 1–2 full days for Amman, plus a day for a trip to Madaba and Mount Nebo.

Orientation

Amman is organized in "Circles" (roundabouts), numbered from 1st Circle (near Downtown) to 8th Circle (city outskirts):

  • Downtown (Al-Balad): The historic center in the valley. Roman Theater, Citadel, Souks, Nymphaeum. Affordable hotels and the best street food.
  • 1st–3rd Circle / Rainbow Street: Amman's trendy district on Jebel Amman. Cafés, bookstores, galleries, boutique hotels. The best place to stay for first-time visitors.
  • Abdali (at 2nd Circle): The new business district with the Boulevard, malls, and the Jordan Museum.
  • Sweifieh / 5th–6th Circle: Upscale residential area with international restaurants and shopping centers.
  • Abdoun: The nightlife district with bars and clubs.
  • 7th Circle: JETT bus station for long-distance buses to Petra and Aqaba.

💡 Tipp

Uber/Careem work excellently in Amman and are cheaper than regular taxis. Short distances cost 1–2 JOD. For Downtown: explore on foot, for the hill districts take Uber.
