Algonquin Provincial Park — Pure Wilderness★★

Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario (260 km nördlich von Toronto)
Tagespass: 18 CAD/Fahrzeug

The Algonquin Provincial Park is the counterpoint to urban Toronto—7,653 km² of untouched wilderness, just 3 hours north of the metropolis. Founded in 1893, it is one of Canada's oldest provincial parks and a place of longing for all who seek the wild, untamed Canada: endless forests, over 2,400 lakes, moose, beavers, black bears, and wolf howls at night.

Algonquin is Canada for canoeists. The network of lakes and portages (carrying routes between lakes) stretches over thousands of kilometers—you can paddle for weeks without meeting another person. For beginners, the lakes along the Highway 60 Corridor (the only road through the park) offer easy access to canoe tours and hiking trails.

Top Activities

  • Canoeing: Day trips on Canoe Lake or Opeongo Lake (canoe rental from 50 CAD/day). Multi-day backcountry trips with portages for the experienced—the most authentic Canadian experience ever.
  • Indian Summer: In September/October, the park explodes in red, orange, and gold. The Lookout Trail (1.9 km) offers the best panoramic view over the sea of colors.
  • Wolf Howls: Parks Ontario organizes "Public Wolf Howls" in August—rangers imitate wolf howls and hope for a response from the wild packs. Thousands of visitors come for this. Free, but places are limited.
  • Algonquin Art Centre: Inspired by the Group of Seven, who revolutionized Canadian landscape painting here in the early 20th century. Tom Thomson's mysterious death in Canoe Lake (1917) remains one of Canada's most famous criminal cases.

💡 Tipp

The best insider tip for the Indian Summer: Go to Algonquin at the end of September and take Highway 60 from west to east. Stop at the Lookout Trail and the Oxtongue River Trail—the colors are breathtaking. It's much quieter during the week.
