V&A Waterfront

The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront is Cape Town's most visited attraction — a historic harbor district that has developed into an elegant mix of shopping, restaurants, museums, and entertainment without losing its maritime charm. The view from the harbor to Table Mountain is iconic and spectacular at any time of day.

Highlights

  • Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) — Africa's largest museum for contemporary art, housed in a spectacularly converted grain silo. The architecture alone is worth the visit — huge hollowed-out concrete tubes form cathedral-like exhibition spaces. Admission: 230 ZAR (11€), free for South African citizens on Wednesdays.
  • Two Oceans Aquarium — From penguins and sharks to shimmering jellyfish and the kelp forest tank: a fantastic aquarium, especially for families. The "Ocean Exhibit" with Ragged-Tooth Sharks is impressive. Admission: 240 ZAR (12€).
  • Nobel Square — Bronze statues of the four South African Nobel Peace Prize laureates: Albert Luthuli, Desmond Tutu, F.W. de Klerk, and Nelson Mandela. A moving place for reflection.
  • Watershed Market — Over 365 stalls with crafts, design, and souvenirs in a huge hall. High quality, fair prices, local designers and artists.
  • Harbor & Boat Tours — Ferries to Robben Island, sunset cruises, boat tours to the seals on Duiker Island, and whale-watching trips depart from the Waterfront. The seal colony on Duiker Island is reachable by boat in 20 minutes.

💡 Tipp

Spend the afternoon at the Waterfront and stay for the sunset — the view over the harbor to Table Mountain as the sun sets behind Signal Hill is one of the most beautiful moments in Cape Town. The restaurants at the pier are particularly atmospheric at sunset.
