Aberdare National Park★★
The Aberdare Range is a mountain range with dense mountain forest, bamboo thickets, moorlands, and waterfalls — completely different from the typical savanna safari. The national park (767 km²) is located northwest of Mount Kenya and is famous for its rainy climate and unique wildlife.
Highlights
- The Ark & Treetops: Legendary lodges built over illuminated waterholes — you can watch elephants, buffaloes, rhinos, and the rare Bongo (a shy forest antelope) from the balcony at night
- Waterfalls: Karuru Falls (273 m, Kenya's highest), Chania Falls, and the picturesque Gura Falls
- Melanistic Leopards: The Aberdares are one of the few places worldwide where black leopards (panthers) are sighted — extremely rare!
- Historical: At the Treetops Hotel, Princess Elizabeth learned in 1952 that her father had died and she had become Queen of England
The Aberdares are not a classic Big Five destination, but perfect for nature lovers who want to experience dense forests, waterfalls, and rare animals in a mystical atmosphere.
