Lake Nakuru — Flamingos★★★
The Lake Nakuru National Park is famous for its iconic image: millions of pink flamingos turning the shores of the alkaline soda lake into a pink carpet. Although flamingo numbers have fluctuated since the floods of 2013 (many have migrated to Lake Bogoria), Nakuru remains spectacular.
What You See
- Flamingos: Both lesser and greater flamingos. Best seen on the southern and eastern shores
- Rhinos: The park is a rhino sanctuary with both black and white rhinos — one of the best places in Kenya for rhino sightings
- Rothschild Giraffes: The endangered subspecies has been successfully reintroduced here
- Lions, leopards, buffaloes, waterbucks
- Baboon Cliff: Viewpoint with panoramic views over the entire lake — perfect for photos
The park is compact (188 km²) and can be explored well in half a day — perfect as a stopover on the way to the Masai Mara or Naivasha.
💡 Tipp
If the flamingos are missing at Nakuru, continue to Lake Bogoria (about 1 hour north) — there, millions of flamingos often gather at the hot springs. Even fewer tourists!
