Discovering the Highlands
The Kenyan Highlands and the Great Rift Valley together form one of Africa's most dramatic landscapes. The Rift Valley — the great East African rift — stretches like a giant scar through Kenya, creating a chain of lakes, volcanoes, and steep escarpments.
The region lies at an altitude of 1,500–2,500 meters, providing a pleasantly mild climate: daytime temperatures of 20–28°C, cool at night (8–15°C). It is fertile farmland — Kenya's famous tea and coffee grow here. The landscape is green, hilly, and sometimes reminiscent of Switzerland — no wonder the British colonialists felt particularly at home here.
The highlights of the highlands — Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, Hell's Gate, and Mount Kenya — can be perfectly combined as a round trip from Nairobi before continuing to the Masai Mara or the coast.
