Local Transport
Metro
Copenhagen's Metro is futuristic: fully automated (driverless!), runs 24/7 (every night, every hour) and has 4 lines. The M1 and M2 connect the airport, center, and Nørrebro. The M3 (Cityringen, opened in 2019) is a ring under the city center and stops at all important points (Kongens Nytorv, Marmorkirken, Frederiksberg, Nørreport). The M4 goes to Nordhavn and the new harbor district. Single ride: 24 DKK (3.20€), cheaper with Rejsekort.
S-Tog (Suburban Train)
The red S-Tog connect the suburbs and are useful for day trips (Hillerød/Frederiksborg, Helsingør via regional train). Same tickets as Metro and bus.
Bus
The bus network perfectly complements Metro and S-Tog. The harbor buses (line 991 and 992) are boats that navigate the harbor as water buses — free with Rejsekort/Copenhagen Card! They connect the main station, Nyhavn, Holmen, the Opera, and Nordatlantens Brygge. Cheapest canal tour in Copenhagen.
Bicycle
The best mode of transport in Copenhagen is the bicycle — faster than the bus, more flexible than the Metro, cheaper than both. Rental bikes from 60 DKK/day (8€) via Donkey Republic (app) or Bycyklen. The city is completely flat — ideal for cyclists. Bicycles can be taken for free on the S-Tog (not on the Metro during peak hours).
On Foot
Copenhagen is extremely pedestrian-friendly. The main attractions are within a 2-kilometer radius. From Tivoli to Nyhavn: 15 minutes. From Nyhavn to the Little Mermaid: 20 minutes. You only really need Metro or bike if you plan to visit the outer districts (Nørrebro, Vesterbro) or day trips.
