Strøget & Shopping
Strøget — The Longest Pedestrian Street in Europe
The Strøget stretches over 1.1 kilometers from Rådhuspladsen (City Hall Square) to Kongens Nytorv — the longest pedestrian street in Europe. It consists of several interconnected streets (Frederiksberggade, Nygade, Vimmelskaftet, Amagertorv, Østergade) and is Copenhagen's shopping heart: international brands, Danish designers, souvenir shops, and street musicians.
Design Shopping
Copenhagen is a design mecca — these addresses should not be missed:
- Illums Bolighus: The department store for Scandinavian design — four floors with furniture, lamps, tableware, and home accessories. Here you find Arne Jacobsen, Georg Jensen, Royal Copenhagen, and HAY under one roof.
- HAY House: The Danish design star of the moment. Colorful, modern furniture and accessories at surprisingly affordable prices. The flagship store at Amagertorv is worth seeing.
- Royal Copenhagen: The royal porcelain since 1775 — the hand-painted plates with the blue pattern (Blue Fluted) are collectibles. In the flagship store at Amagertorv, you can also buy B-grade items with small defects at a lower price.
- Georg Jensen: Silver jewelry and cutlery in typical Danish design. Timeless elegance since 1904.
- Designmuseum Danmark: Not a store, but the museum for applied art and design — but with an excellent museum shop. In the former Frederiks Hospital (18th century). Admission: 130 DKK (€17), free on Wednesdays.
Torvehallerne — The Food Temple
The Torvehallerne at Israels Plads are Copenhagen's culinary hotspot: two glass market halls with over 60 stalls. Fresh Danish oysters, Smørrebrød, cheese, chocolate, craft beer, coffee, and fresh fruit. Perfect for a late breakfast or lunch. The Grød porridge bar has made Danish porridge (grød) a gourmet experience. The Coffee Collective serves the best coffee in town.
💡 Tipp
The side streets of Strøget are often more interesting than the main street itself: the Latinerkvarteret (Latin Quarter) with second-hand bookstores, Pistolstræde with small boutiques, and Grønnegade with design shops. Here is Copenhagen's soul.
