Tivoli — The Magical Garden
The Tivoli is not just an amusement park — it is a piece of Danish soul. Opened in 1843, making it the oldest operating amusement park in the world, Tivoli is a magical place where Victorian garden art, roller coasters, pantomime theater, and Michelin-starred restaurants coexist. Walt Disney visited Tivoli several times and said: "If I can ever build anything that's half as beautiful as Tivoli, I'll be a happy man."
The Highlights
- Rutschebanen: The historic wooden roller coaster from 1914 — one of the oldest in the world. A brakeman controls the ride with muscle power. It creaks, wobbles, and has thrilled for over 100 years.
- Pantomimeteatret: The Chinese-style pantomime theater (1874) offers free pantomime performances — a tradition older than film. The peacock curtain is iconic.
- The Gardens: 100,000 flowers that change seasonally. Tulips in spring, roses in summer, dahlias in autumn. The nighttime lighting (over 120,000 lamps) transforms Tivoli into a fairyland.
- Koncertsalen: The concert hall offers high-quality concerts from classical to rock to pop — included in the admission price (certain concerts).
- Nimb Hotel & Restaurant: The luxurious Moorish-style boutique hotel right in Tivoli. The Nimb Brasserie restaurant is top-notch.
Tivoli at Christmas
From mid-November to the end of December, Tivoli transforms into one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe: 500,000 lights, a giant Christmas tree, mulled wine (gløgg), Æbleskiver (Danish pancake balls with powdered sugar and jam), crafts, and an atmosphere that melts even the biggest Grinch.
💡 Tipp
Tivoli Admission: 155 DKK (€21) — for the park only. Rides cost extra (25–85 DKK per ride) or there is a Ride-Flat for about 260 DKK. Tip: Come in the evening after 6 PM — the lighting is most beautiful then and the atmosphere magical. Free concerts on Fridays in summer.
