Savings Tips
Crete is already affordable — with these tips, it becomes even cheaper:
- Travel in the off-season: In May, June, September, and October, accommodations and rental cars are 30–50% cheaper than in the peak season of July/August. The weather is still excellent.
- Book rental cars early: Rental cars in Crete are inexpensive (from €25/day), but often fully booked in the high season. Book 2–3 months in advance. Local providers (e.g., Cars Heraklion, Crete Car Rental) are often cheaper than international chains.
- Tavern instead of tourist trap: Taverns away from the main tourist strips are cheaper and better. Rule of thumb: Where Greeks sit, it's good. Where a laminated menu with photos is on the sidewalk, it's expensive and bad.
- Water from the supermarket: 6-pack of 1.5l bottles for under €2 instead of €1.50 per bottle at the kiosk.
- Free beaches: Most beaches in Crete are freely accessible. Sun loungers cost €5–10 per set — but you don't need them if you bring your own towel.
- Raki is free: In traditional taverns, Raki (Tsikoudia) and often a dessert are free after the meal. This is Cretan hospitality — don't refuse!
- Combo tickets: The Archaeological Museum Heraklion + Knossos is available as a combo ticket for €20 (instead of €15 + €12 individually).
- Bakeries (Fournos): Cretan bakeries sell Bougatsa (semolina pudding pastry), Tyropita (cheese pie), and Spanakopita (spinach pie) for €2–3 — perfect breakfast or snack.
