Frangokastello & Sfakia — Fortress and Freedom Struggle
Frangokastello (Φραγκοκάστελο, "Castle of the Franks") is one of the most photogenic places in Crete: A perfectly preserved Venetian fortress from 1371 stands directly on the beach, with the snow-capped peaks of the White Mountains behind — a scene of overwhelming drama. The fortress was built to control the rebellious Sfakiots (mountain dwellers of the region) — with moderate success, as the proud Sfakiots were never subdued.
Frangokastello is shrouded in one of Crete's most fascinating legends: Every year in May, in the early morning hours, the Drosoulites are said to appear — the shadows of an army moving across the plain in front of the fortress. These are the ghosts of the Greek freedom fighters under Hatzimichalis Dalianis, who fell here in 1828 fighting the Ottomans. The phenomenon (probably a mirage due to the special weather conditions in early summer) is confirmed by locals and scientists alike — and remains unexplained to this day.
The beach of Frangokastello is a dream: shallow, sandy, warm, and sheltered from the wind (unlike many north coast beaches). Perfect for families. A few tavernas and guesthouses complete the picture — but there is no large-scale tourism here. The tranquility is almost meditative.
North of Frangokastello lies the Sfakia region (Σφακιά) — Crete's wildest and most inaccessible area. The Sfakiots are legendary: mountain dwellers who were never subdued by Venetians, Ottomans, or Germans, and whose sense of honor, hospitality, and pride in independence remain proverbial to this day. Chora Sfakion (Hora Sfakion), the "main village" of the region, is a tiny harbor from which ferries depart for Loutro, Agia Roumeli, and Gavdos. The Imbros Gorge (8 km, 2–3 hours, easier than Samaria) ends here and is an excellent alternative to the crowded Samaria Gorge.
From Chora Sfakion, you can also reach Gavdos by ferry — Europe's southernmost inhabited point, an island at the end of the world with wild beaches, a hippie atmosphere, and the feeling of having arrived at the last spot on earth. Ferry: 2–3× per week, about 1.5 hours, from 15€.
