Overview of Regions

Crete can be divided into four major travel regions — each with its own character, landscape, and highlights:

West Crete (Chania & Rethymno)

For whom: Beach lovers, hikers, romantics
The most spectacular part of the island: The Venetian port city of Chania with its famous waterfront, the dream beaches of Balos and Elafonisi, the mighty Samaria Gorge, and the wild White Mountains (Lefka Ori). Also, the charming Rethymno with its fortress and the untouched south coast with its fishing villages. The region combines Crete's most beautiful beaches with its best hiking opportunities.

Central Crete (Heraklion & Surroundings)

For whom: Cultural travelers, history enthusiasts, wine lovers
The region around Crete's capital Heraklion houses the greatest treasures of the Minoan civilization: the Palace of Knossos, the Archaeological Museum Heraklion (one of the most important in Europe), and the excavations of Phaistos and Gortyn. Additionally, the emerging wine region around Archanes and the hippie past of Matala.

East Crete (Lasithi)

For whom: Explorers, beach vacationers away from the masses, nature lovers
The east is quieter and less developed than the west: The elegant port city of Agios Nikolaos on the Mirabello Gulf, the legendary leper island of Spinalonga, the unique palm beach of Vai, and the enchanted Lasithi Plateau with its windmills. Here you find Crete as it was 30 years ago.

South Coast

For whom: Individual tourists, peace seekers, adventurers
The south coast is Crete's wild counterpart to the touristy north: cliffs, secluded bays, fishing villages without road access, and an atmosphere reminiscent of the end of the world. Plakias, the legendary Preveli Palm Beach, the car-free Loutro, and the fortress of Frangokastello — those who come here seek authenticity.
