Setúbal & Serra da Arrábida
Setúbal is a lively port city 50 km south of Lisbon, known for the best seafood in Portugal, the Muscatel wine, and the spectacular Serra da Arrábida — a wooded limestone mountain range that plunges directly into the turquoise sea. Setúbal is the day trip for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle.
Serra da Arrábida
The Serra da Arrábida Natural Park is one of the most beautiful coastal landscapes in Portugal: dense pine forests, dramatic cliffs, and hidden coves with turquoise waters that resemble the Caribbean more than the Atlantic.
- Praia de Galapinhos: Voted "best beach in Europe" in 2017 — crystal-clear water, white cliffs, pine forests down to the sea. Only accessible on foot (15 min. from the parking lot). In summer, access is limited (nature conservation) — come early!
- Praia de Figueirinha: More accessible and family-friendly, with a beach bar and parking. Warm, calm water.
- Convento da Arrábida: A former Franciscan monastery (16th century) spectacularly built into the cliffs — visits only with a guided tour.
Setúbal City
- Mercado do Livramento: The most beautiful fish market in Portugal — piles of fresh fish, seafood, fruits, and flowers in an Art Deco hall with Azulejo decor. Some say: more beautiful than the Boqueria in Barcelona.
- Choco frito: Setúbal's specialty — breaded and fried cuttlefish. In every tasca in the city for €6–8. Addictive.
- Dolphin Tour: Wild dolphins live in the Sado estuary — one of the few populations in an estuary worldwide. Boat tours: from €25 (2h).
Getting There
From Lisbon: Fertagus train + bus (1h) or TST bus directly from Sete Rios (50 min., €4.50). For Arrábida, you need a rental car — the coves are hard to reach by public transport. Alternatively: organized tours from Lisbon (from €50, full day including wine tasting).
💡 Tipp
Combine Setúbal with a wine tasting in the region: The Muscatel de Setúbal is a sweet, golden dessert wine appreciated worldwide. The wineries José Maria da Fonseca and Bacalhôa offer tours with tastings (from €10).
