Sintra — Fairy-tale Castles in the Misty Forest
Sintra is Lisbon's absolute must-see day trip — and one of the most magical places in Europe. The Serra de Sintra, a wooded hill range 30 km west of Lisbon, is dotted with palaces, castles, villas, and gardens that look as if they came from a fantasy novel. UNESCO World Heritage since 1995 — the entire cultural landscape, not just individual buildings.
Palácio Nacional da Pena
The Palácio da Pena is Sintra's superstar — a colorful fantasy castle on the highest point of the Serra (529 m). Built from 1842 for King Ferdinand II, the palace combines Neo-Gothic, Moorish Revival, Renaissance, and Manueline styles into an architectural frenzy in red, yellow, purple, and blue. From the terrace: panoramic views over the entire region to the Atlantic. In clear weather, you can see as far as Lisbon. Admission: €14 (Park + Palace). In summer: 2-hour wait possible — book online in advance!
Quinta da Regaleira
The Quinta da Regaleira is Sintra's mysterious jewel — a neo-Gothic estate with towers, grottos, hidden tunnels, and the famous Poço Iniciático (Initiation Well): a 27-meter deep spiral staircase leading into the earth, connected with a labyrinth of underground passages. Masonic symbolism, Templar mystique, and an atmosphere like a Dan Brown novel. Admission: €10.
Further Highlights
- Castelo dos Mouros: Moorish castle ruins (8th/9th century) with walkable battlements and views over Sintra and the Pena. Admission: €8. The hike from the center up (40 min.) leads through dense forest.
- Palácio Nacional de Sintra: The palace in the center with the iconic white chimneys (15th century). Less spectacular than the Pena, but historically significant and less crowded. Admission: €10.
- Monserrate: A romantic palace (19th century) with the most beautiful botanical garden in Portugal — exotic plants from all over the world in a fairy-tale park landscape. Quiet, few tourists. Admission: €8.
Getting There & Tips
From Lisbon Rossio: Train to Sintra (40 min., €2.30 one-way). Trains every 20 min. In the center: Bus 434 (Hop-on-Hop-off, €7) goes to Castelo dos Mouros and Pena. To Regaleira: 15 min. walk from the center.
💡 Tipp
Come as early as possible (first train around 6:30 AM) — the crowds arrive from 11 AM and the queues explode. Strategy: First Quinta da Regaleira (opens at 9:30 AM, still empty), then Bus 434 to Pena, on the way back Castelo dos Mouros. Avoid weekends and holidays.
Achtung
Sintra is crowded. In summer (July/August) and on weekends, it's chaos: 2-hour queues at the Pena, overcrowded buses, no parking. Book all tickets online in advance and come during the week.
