The Perhentian Islands are Malaysia's island dream — two islands (Perhentian Besar = big island, Perhentian Kecil = small island) with crystal-clear, turquoise water, white sandy beaches, and a relaxed atmosphere reminiscent of the Maldives — at a fraction of the price.

Perhentian Kecil is the backpacker island: Long Beach on the east side is the main strip with hostels, beach bar-restaurants, and a relaxed hippie vibe. Coral Bay on the west side is quieter and has better snorkeling right from the beach. Perhentian Besar is the quieter, slightly more upscale island with resorts and families — less party, more relaxation.

What Makes the Perhentians Special

  • Turtles: Green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles are ubiquitous — when snorkeling right from the beach, you're almost guaranteed to see them.
  • Snorkeling: Some of the best snorkeling spots in Malaysia. The corals are healthy and colorful, clownfish, parrotfish, and nudibranchs abound near the shore.
  • Diving: PADI Open Water from 800 MYR (~160 €), fun dives from 80 MYR. Highlights: Sugar Wreck (sunken ship), Shark Point (blacktip reef sharks), Temple of the Sea (coral garden).
  • Romance: Evenings: Bonfires on the beach, endless stars, the sound of the waves. No cars, no noise, no stress.

Getting There: Speedboat from Kuala Besut (45 min., 70 MYR return). Kuala Besut can be reached by bus from KL (8–9 hours, from 45 MYR) or flight to Kota Bharu (1h, from 49 MYR) + taxi (45 min., 80 MYR).

💡 Tipp

Perhentian Kecil (Long Beach) for backpackers and night owls, Perhentian Besar for families and those seeking peace. Bring cash — there are no ATMs on the islands! Plan enough for the entire stay.

Achtung

The Perhentian Islands are CLOSED from November to February due to the northeast monsoon. All accommodations, dive schools, and ferry connections cease operations. Best time: April to September.
