Tioman Island★★
Pulau Tioman was once voted one of the most beautiful islands in the world by TIME magazine — and rightly so. The rugged volcanic island with its twin peaks (Gunung Kajang, 1,038 m), dense rainforests, and secluded bays has a wilder, more adventurous character than the Perhentians.
The island is divided into several Kampungs (villages), which are only connected by boat:
- Tekek: The "center" with an airport (decommissioned), shops, and most accommodations.
- Air Batang (ABC): Popular backpacker village with affordable chalets right on the water.
- Juara: On the wild east side — the most beautiful and secluded beach on the island, accessible by 4×4 track or boat.
- Salang: In the north — good diving spots, relaxed vibe.
Tioman is also a Duty-Free Zone — alcohol is cheap here. Diving is excellent (PADI courses from 750 MYR), snorkeling is fantastic (Marine Park Fee: 30 MYR), and the hike across the island from Tekek to Juara (7 km, 2–3h) leads through dense jungle with monitor lizards and monkeys.
💡 Tipp
Juara Beach is the insider tip — wilder, emptier, and more beautiful than the west side. Crossing the island on foot (Tekek → Juara) is a small adventure through the rainforest. Between June and August, turtles lay their eggs on Juara Beach.
Achtung
Like the Perhentians, Tioman is closed from November to February (monsoon). Ferries do not operate, and most accommodations close.
