City Tour: Malé City Walk★★

Duration: 3–4 hours | Distance: approx. 3 km | Best Time: 3:00 PM (Fish market spectacle + sunset at the end)

1. Fish Market & Local Market (Start)
Start at the northern quay, where the dhonis are unloaded. Stroll through the fish market (tuna, negotiations, filleting acrobatics), then next door through the Local Market (coconuts, betel nuts, rihaakuru). 30–45 minutes.

2. Jumhooree Maidan (Republic Square)
Only 200 m south of the fish market. The central square at the harbor, where the Maldivian flag flies. Families gather here in the evenings. On the left, the old customs house, on the right, the view of the ferry terminals. 10 minutes.

3. Islamic Center (Grand Friday Mosque)
200 m southwest. The golden dome of the largest mosque in the Maldives is the city's landmark. Built in 1984 with Saudi funding, it accommodates 5,000 worshippers. Non-Muslims can visit the mosque outside prayer times — wear appropriate clothing! 15–20 minutes.

4. Hukuru Miskiy (Friday Mosque)
5 minutes on foot to the west. The oldest building in the Maldives (1658), made of coral stone blocks without mortar. Cemetery with sultans' graves, Medhu Ziyaarath next to it. 20 minutes.

5. Sultan Park & National Museum
Directly adjacent. Green oasis with trees and fountains. The museum displays Buddhist artifacts, sultans' thrones, and Quran manuscripts. 30–45 minutes.

6. Majeedhee Magu (Main Shopping Street)
The longest and busiest street in the city. Here you find everything: electronics, clothing, souvenirs, diving equipment. Stop at a Hotaa (tea shop) for Hedhikaa snacks and black tea — authentic Malé experience. 20–30 minutes.

7. Tsunami Monument
At the western end of Majeedhee Magu. Memorial for the 82 victims of the 2004 tsunami, which also caused devastating damage in the Maldives. A quiet moment of reflection. 10 minutes.

8. Artificial Beach (Rasfannu)
At the western tip of Malé. Artificially created beach, popular with locals, especially on Friday evenings. Cafés, playgrounds, view of Villingili. 20 minutes.

9. Waterfront (South Side)
Walk along the southern promenade towards the east. Locals sit on benches, children play, the view sweeps across the channel to Villingili. Particularly atmospheric at sunset. 15 minutes.

10. Henveiru (End) — Dinner in a local restaurant
The district east of the center has the best local restaurants in the city. This is where the Maldivians themselves eat — away from the tourist routes, but all the more authentic.

💡 Tipp

Malé is compact enough to do everything on foot — but at 30+ °C and high humidity, water is essential. Buy it on the go in the small shops (10 MVR / 0.60 $ for 1.5 liters). Umbrella or rain jacket in monsoon season — the showers come quickly.
