Pitfalls & Scams at the Djemaa
The Djemaa el-Fna is safe, but there are some classic tourist traps:
- Snake charmers: They put a snake around your neck without asking and then demand 100–200 MAD for a photo. If you don't want a photo: a clear "La, shukran!" (No, thank you!) and move on.
- Henna artists: They grab your hand and start painting before you agree. Then they demand 200–500 MAD. Negotiate the price BEFOREHAND (30–50 MAD for a small design).
- Monkey photos: Barbary macaques on your shoulder for photos — ethically questionable (the animals are often poorly treated). Please do not support.
- "Friendly" guides: Young men offer to "guide" you through the souks — and demand 100–200 MAD at the end. If you want a guide, book an official one through your Riad.
- Water carriers: The colorful water carriers in traditional attire pose for photos — but only for a fee (10–20 MAD is fair).
💡 Tipp
Basic rule on the Djemaa: If someone puts something in your hand, paints on your arm, or places a snake around your neck — it is NOT free. A clear "La, shukran!" and move on. This is not rude, but normal.
