Kalaw — Trekking to Inle Lake

Myanmar's Trekking Highlight

The 2-day/1-night trek from Kalaw to Inle Lake is one of Myanmar's most popular hikes — and for many travelers, the emotional highlight of the entire trip. Not just because of the landscape (which is beautiful — rice fields, bamboo forests, tea plantations, wide hilly landscapes), but because of the encounters with the people. The route passes through villages of various ethnic groups — Pa-O, Danu, Taung Yoe — and the overnight stay with a host family is an experience that will forever shape your image of Myanmar.

The Trekking Route

  • Day 1 (approx. 20 km, 6–7h walking time): Start in Kalaw (1,320 m above sea level). Through pine forests, past chili and sesame fields, through a valley with bamboo, and on to a Pa-O or Danu village. The vegetation constantly changes — from tropical lush to subtropical sparse. Lunch break at a farmer's house offering tea and fruit. Overnight stay: In a host family's house or a monastery. Sleeping is on the floor, on mats. Dinner is cooked by the host family: rice, curry, vegetables, soup — simple, but prepared with a warmth that touches you.
  • Day 2 (approx. 15 km, 5–6h walking time): Through rice terraces and tea plantations, with views of the lake in the distance, down to Inle Lake. The last kilometers by boat over the canal and the lake to Nyaung Shwe. Arrival in the afternoon.
  • Alternative: The 3-day/2-night version offers shorter daily stages and more time in the villages — ideal for those who want to engage more with the cultural encounters.

Practical Information

  • Price: 25–40 USD/person for 2 days, including English-speaking guide, all meals, and village overnight stay. An unbeatable value for money.
  • Fitness: Moderate — no extreme inclines, but 15–20 km per day on partly uneven terrain. Basic fitness is sufficient, hiking boots recommended.
  • Season: November–March optimal (dry, cool temperatures). Muddy but possible in the rainy season.
  • Booking: In any hotel/hostel in Kalaw or Nyaung Shwe. Recommended agencies: Sam's Family Trekking, A1 Trekking, Ever Smile. Minimum: 2 people, groups often form in hostels.
  • Packing: Warm clothing for the night (down to 5°C!), headlamp, water bottle, good hiking boots, rain jacket. Most luggage can be left at the hotel in Kalaw or Nyaung Shwe.

💡 Tipp

The Kalaw-Inle trekking is THE experience for many Myanmar travelers. The overnight stay in the village is unforgettable: You eat with the family, play with the children, sit by the fire in the evening, and experience rural Myanmar up close. Bring small gifts — pens, notebooks, or sweets for the children. And warm clothing: At night, it can get quite cold at 1,300 m altitude!
