Rotating Markets & Nyaung Shwe

The Rotating Five-Day Markets

One of the most fascinating cultural phenomena of Inle Lake are the rotating five-day markets (Nam Pan Market, Ywama Market, etc.). On each day of the five-day week, the market takes place at a different location around the lake — a system that has worked for centuries, connecting the various villages and ethnic groups of the region.

The markets are a kaleidoscope of cultures: Intha women in their traditional headscarves, Pa-O women with colorful turbans, Shan traders with mountain vegetables, Danu farmers with rice and spices — each ethnicity is recognizable by their attire. The atmosphere is lively but not hectic: Bargaining is friendly, meals are shared at food stalls, and the products range from fresh fish and vegetables to handwoven fabrics to Thanaka paste and Cheroot cigars.

Tip: Ask at your hotel where the market is today and plan your boat trip accordingly. The markets are most lively in the morning from 6–11 AM. Some of the markets (especially Ywama) are now touristy, others (on the southern shore) are much more authentic.

Nyaung Shwe — The Gateway to Inle Lake

Nyaung Shwe is the small town at the northern canal leading to Inle Lake, and the tourist base for all Inle activities. Here you will find accommodations ranging from backpacker hostels to comfortable hotels, restaurants with international and local cuisine, bicycle rentals, and the boat docks for lake tours.

  • Morning Market: The local market in Nyaung Shwe (daily, 6–8 AM) is worth getting up early for: fresh vegetables, Shan noodles for breakfast, Thanaka logs, Cheroot cigars, and the colorful hustle and bustle of the various ethnicities in their traditional costumes.
  • Bicycle Tour: Rent a bicycle (2,000 MMK / 0.60 EUR) and explore the rice fields and villages around Nyaung Shwe. Especially beautiful in the late afternoon when the light turns golden.
  • Red Mountain Estate Winery: Yes, there is winemaking in Myanmar! The Red Mountain Vineyards on the hills above Inle Lake produce surprisingly drinkable wine. Wine tasting (4 wines) for 5,000 MMK (1.50 EUR) with a panoramic view over the lake and the Shan mountains. Particularly atmospheric at sunset.
