Dune 45★★★
The most famous dune in Namibia — and the easiest to climb. Dune 45 stands 45 km behind the Sesriem Gate right on the tar road and is the classic introductory dune for most visitors.
It is about 170 meters high (which feels much higher when you're stuck in loose sand!) and has a sharp, curved ridge perfect for climbing. The ascent takes 30–45 minutes, and from the top, a 360-degree panorama opens up over the endless sea of dunes.
The trick: Come before sunrise. The dune is perfectly positioned for the first morning light — one side in dazzling orange, the other in deep shadow. The contrasts are surreal. And the sand is still cool underfoot (during the day it gets over 60°C hot!).
Dune 45 is also so photogenic because individual camel thorn trees stand at its base — the perfect composition of red sand, blue sky, and green tree.
💡 Tipp
Bring shoes that you can throw away full of sand afterward — or go barefoot (the sand is still cool in the morning). Sticks don't help, everything sinks into the deep sand. Walk slowly, the sand drains your energy.
