NamibRand Nature Reserve★★
The NamibRand Nature Reserve is Namibia's largest private nature reserve (2,150 km²) and borders directly on the Namib-Naukluft National Park. It was founded in 1984 and combines several former farms into a contiguous protected area.
What makes NamibRand unique:
- Gold-Tier Dark Sky Reserve: With practically zero light pollution, NamibRand is one of the best places in the world for stargazing. The Milky Way is so bright that it casts shadows — a sight that will change you forever
- Limited visitor numbers: Only one person per 1,000 hectares. Exclusivity and absolute silence
- Dramatic landscape: Red dunes, grass plains, inselbergs, and the endless expanse of the Namib plain
- Wildlife: Oryx, springbok, mountain zebra, brown hyena, and over 100 bird species
There are several exclusive lodges in the reserve — including the famous Wolwedans (wooden chalets with a star bed on the roof) and &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge with its own observatory. These lodges are among the best in Namibia but are high-priced.
💡 Tipp
NamibRand is the perfect stopover between Windhoek and Sossusvlei. One night here — with a sundowner drive and stargazing — is one of the most magical experiences in Namibia.
