Right by the Sesriem Gate lies the Sesriem Canyon — a narrow, up to 30-meter-deep gorge that the Tsauchab River has carved into the conglomerate layers over millions of years. The name comes from the early settlers who had to tie six straps (leather straps) together to draw water from the canyon floor.

The canyon is 1 km long and can be entered via a natural staircase at the beginning. Below, you walk through the narrow gorge — the walls rise vertically, and after rainfalls, emerald green water pools stand at the bottom. The rock layers in red, orange, and beige tell 15–18 million years of earth history.

The Sesriem Canyon is perfect for the afternoon — when you return from dune climbing in the morning and want to bridge the midday heat. It is cooler in the gorge than above.
