Walvis Bay — Flamingos & Dolphins★★
Walvis Bay is only 30 km south of Swakopmund and is Namibia's most important port — but for tourists, it is mainly known for its spectacular lagoon, which is one of the most important wetlands in southern Africa.
The highlights of Walvis Bay:
- Flamingo Lagoon: Thousands of flamingos (both Greater and Lesser Flamingos) wade through the shallow waters of the lagoon. Especially spectacular in the morning light, when the pink of the birds reflects in the still water. Best observed from the lagoon boardwalk
- Dolphin Cruise: Boat tours in the bay take you to the Heaviside dolphins (endemic!), fur seals, pelicans, and with luck, sunfish and whales (seasonal). Oysters and champagne are served on the boat
- Pelican Point: A peninsula with a lighthouse and a large fur seal colony. Accessible by kayak (3–4 hours, unforgettable!) or by 4×4
- Sandwich Harbour: Where the dunes of the Namib fall directly into the sea — one of Namibia's most dramatic landscapes. Only accessible by guided 4×4 tour, as the tidal drive through deep sand and water is extremely challenging
- Salt Pans: The vast salt extraction facilities on the southern edge of the city glow in surreal pink, violet, and white tones
