The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is considered New Zealand's best day hike and one of the most spectacular in the world. The 19.4-kilometer trail leads through a surreal volcanic landscape that served as the backdrop for Mordor in "The Lord of the Rings" — and reality surpasses any CGI effects.

Step by Step — The Route

Km 0–4: Mangatepopo Valley (1 hour)
The start is gentle — a well-maintained boardwalk leads through subalpine tussock grassland along the Mangatepopo Stream. To the left rises the perfect cone of Mount Ngauruhoe (Mount Doom). The landscape is still green and peaceful — that will soon change.

Km 4–6: Devil's Staircase (1–1.5 hours)
Here it gets serious: 600 meters of elevation gain over 2 kilometers of loose volcanic rock. The steps are steep, but the view back over the valley becomes more dramatic with each step. At the top, you reach the South Crater — a flat, moon-like plain that you cross in 20 minutes.

Km 6–8: Red Crater (1 hour)
The ascent to the Red Crater (1,886 m) — the highest point of the hike — is steep and on loose rock. Once at the top: A view that will never let you go. The crater itself is deep red (oxidized iron), steam rises from cracks, the smell of sulfur is in the air — and below you lie the Emerald Lakes.

Km 8–10: Emerald Lakes & Blue Lake (30 minutes)
The three Emerald Lakes are the postcard motif of the Crossing: emerald green crater lakes, whose unreal color is created by volcanic minerals (copper and iron sulfates). The descent from the Red Crater to the lakes is steep and slippery on volcanic ash — take your time. Continue to the Blue Lake (Te Wai-Whakaata-o-te-Rangihīroa), which is sacred to the Māori of the Ngāti Tūwharetoa tribe — do not touch, do not enter, do not drink.

Km 10–14: North Crater & Descent (1.5 hours)
Over the flat North Crater begins the long descent through tussock grassland and increasingly dense bush. The vegetation returns — a fascinating contrast to the lunar landscape just before.

Km 14–19.4: Ketetahi (1.5–2 hours)
The last section leads through bush forest to the Ketetahi parking lot. The knees get tired here — hiking poles help enormously. In the distance, you see Lake Rotoaira and Lake Taupo.

Mount Ngauruhoe — Detour to Mount Doom

The Mount Ngauruhoe (2,287 m) — Peter Jackson's "Mount Doom" — towers as a perfect volcanic cone over the route. The detour to the summit is NOT marked and NOT officially recommended, but made by many hikers: 3 hours extra (round trip), extremely steep on loose scree (2 steps forward, 1 back). The crater at the summit is 400 meters in diameter and the view over the entire North Island is legendary. Only for fit, experienced hikers in good weather.

💡 Tipp

Start as early as possible (first shuttle at 6:00 from National Park Village) to avoid the crowds and take advantage of stable morning weather. Bring at least 2 liters of water (there is no drinking water on the route!), warm layers (it can be 10°C colder at the Red Crater than below), sunscreen, a rain jacket, and plenty of snacks. The shuttle back (from Ketetahi) must be booked in advance — Tongariro Expeditions or Adrift are the most common providers.

Achtung

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is an alpine hike, not a walk. In bad weather (storm, fog, ice), the route is closed — this happens regularly, even in summer. In winter (Jun–Sep), the route is only doable with alpine equipment (crampons, ice axe). Check the weather and volcano warnings on the DOC website and have a plan B (Taranaki Falls Walk, 2 hours, easy, or Tama Lakes Track, 5 hours, moderate).
